Social Security Claiming-Age Calculator

See how claiming before or after your Full Retirement Age adjusts your monthly benefit, using the real SSA claiming-age rules.

This applies real SSA claiming-age adjustment rules to a benefit estimate you provide — it does not calculate your actual benefit from your earnings history. Get your real estimate from your My Social Security account at ssa.gov.

Months from FRA

How it works: claiming before your Full Retirement Age (FRA) reduces your benefit by 5/9 of 1% per month for the first 36 months early, then 5/12 of 1% per month beyond that. Claiming after FRA increases it by 2/3 of 1% per month (8%/year), capped at age 70. These are real, long-standing SSA rules, not an invented approximation.

Limitations: doesn't account for spousal or survivor benefits, continued work before FRA (which can temporarily withhold benefits), or taxation of benefits. See the SSA Quick Calculator for a fuller estimate.
