Inflation

Plain English

The general rise in prices over time, which means each dollar buys a little less than it used to.

Professional definition

A sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services in an economy over a period of time, reducing the purchasing power of currency.

Example

If inflation is 3% in a year, something that cost $100 at the start of the year would generally cost about $103 by the end.
