Tax-Deferred

Plain English

Taxes on this money are postponed until it's withdrawn later, usually in retirement.

Professional definition

A tax treatment in which income or gains are not taxed in the year earned but instead when funds are withdrawn, common in traditional retirement accounts.

Example

A traditional 401(k) contribution is typically made pre-tax, and both the contribution and its growth are taxed as ordinary income when withdrawn.
